The shores of Lake Erie can turn dangerous quickly. That does not deter photographer Dave Sanford, “Ever since I have been young, I’ve short of have been fascinated with the myths and legends that have surrounded Lake Erie.” A professional photographer for over 20 years, Sanford says that in his spare time, he always heads down to the shore of Lake Erie.
With stormy weather as his muse, Sanford’s photographs embody the majestic power of the lake displaying waves rising out of the water and crashing into each other, and over themselves. For Sanford, the lake is filled with trapped souls, and he sees their faces in the waves.
“It’s almost like the Lake is teasing these souls, and you know, their almost escaping from the Lake, but at the last second the Lake is reaching up and grabbing them and kind of pulling them back down to the depths.”
Sanford grew up in London, Ontario, about a half hour from the shores of Lake Erie. He says he has always seen the water as powerful and potentially dangerous. “People can call me crazy, but I swear the Lake is almost haunted.”
