The Soo Locks are crucial to shipping traffic on the Great Lakes. Estimates are that nearly all the iron ore feeding U.S. steel mills travels through one lock in particular—the Poe.
It was drained this winter for repairs, and Great Lakes Now sent Ric Mixter to take a look at the ongoing maintenance work. He also learned the details of how another lock the size of the Poe is in development to keep this vital shipping gateway operating without a hitch.
