I Speak for the fish: Sammy the red-nosed sucker

I Speak for the fish: Sammy the red-nosed sucker
December 16, 2024 Kathy Johnson, Great Lakes Now

To celebrate the 60th anniversary of stop-motion animated film Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, I Speak for the Fish columnist Kathy Johnson creates a whimsical remix of the classic holiday jingle. Check out her previous columns.

You know darters and daces and pickerel and gar
Catfish and chub and cisco and char
But do you recall
The most famous fish of them all?

Sammy the red-horse sucker
Had a very shiny nose
And if you ever saw it
You would even say it glows

All of the other suckers
Used to laugh and call him names
They never let poor Sammy
Join in any sucker games

Then one windy Fishmas Eve
As the waves grew angrily
To make the great migration
The fish would need a guide.

So, on that fateful stormy eve
The great sturgeon came to say
“Sammy with your nose so bright,
Won’t you guide the school tonight?”

Then all the fishes loved him, loved him
As they shouted out with glee
“Sammy the Red-Nosed Sucker
You’ll go down in history.”
