Thousands of volunteers on all five Great Lakes
The Alliance for the Great Lakes September Adopt-a-Beach event is considered the largest annual day of action for the Great Lakes.
On September 15th, volunteers will not only clean up beaches on all five Great Lakes, they will also collect much-needed data on beach litter.
Some Great Lakes litter facts: more than 85 percent of the litter is plastic. The Rochester Institute of Technology says each year, 22 million pounds of plastic enters the Great Lakes.
The Alliance for the Great Lakes says last year, more than 6, 300 volunteers picked up over 11,000 pounds of debris at more than 240 sites all across the region.
