What happens under the ice of Lake Superior is just one of six research programs funded by NOAA announced by the University of Minnesota Sea Grant office. Researches based in Duluth say they will “lean over the side of a small boat” or “stand out on the ice” to measure light, temperature, water chemistry, and the abundane of phytoplankton and zooplankton. They hope to understand how ice over changes the biology in the lakes and supports aquatic foodwebs.
