Public comment is open until January 16, 2016 on a proposal from NOAA to designate an 875-square mile portion of Lake Michigan in Wisconsin a National Marine Sanctuary. The site, extending from Port Washington to Two Rivers contains 39 known shipwrecks. Fifteen of the known shipwrecks are essentially intact, and three vessels possess standing masts – a rarity in the Great Lakes. The nomination – the first since 2000 – was prompted by legislation introduced by Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin, and Michigan Senators Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters.
